Four male Mechatronics Trainees standing behind a Siemens Mechatronics Trainer

Mechatronics is a short term, non-credit training program providing trainees with instruction in mechanical, electrical, computer, and software & control engineering to design and manufacture products. Three levels of training are available:

  • Level 1: Siemens Certified Mechatronic Systems Assistant
  • Level 2: Siemens Certified Mechatronic Systems Associate
  • Level 3: Siemens Certified Mechatronic Systems Professional

If you're ready for a hands-on career in a dynamic field, Mechatronics training at the SVHEC is here for you. In less than one year, we'll prepare you to be a work-ready mechatronics/industrial maintenance technician. Financial assistance is available.

About the Program

Individuals completing Level 1 training attend class two days a week, for four hours per day over 6 months. Level 2 training takes 10 months to complete, while Level 3, the shortest training level, will vary depending on participant’s prior knowledge and experience.

Training participants who successfully complete the program have the opportunity to earn the internationally recognized Siemens certification This portable, 3rd party validated industry credential is recognized by employers across the globe.

Mechatronics training takes place in the labs and classrooms located on the campus of the Southern Virginia Higher Education Center. Trainees spend about 80% of instructional time in the lab.

Level 3: Siemens Certified Mechatronic Systems Professional

The Level 1 trainee will characteristically be knowledgeable of a machine operating system.  In order for students to become a Siemens Certified Mechatronic Systems Assistant, trainees must complete the following courses and pass the Siemens Mechatronics Systems Certification Program (SMSCP) Level 1 Certification Test.  Each course entails 60 hours of instruction:

  • Course 1: Electrical Components
  • Course 2: Mechanical Components & Electrical Devices
  • Course 3: (Electro) and Pneumatic & Hydraulic Control Circuits
  • Course 4: Digital Fundamentals & PLCs

Only by successfully passing the SMSCP Level 1 Certification Test will the trainee be awarded the certification of Siemens Certified Mechatronic Systems Assistant.

The Level 2 trainee will characteristically be knowledgeable of a machine operating system as a whole, but can also dive in and work with particular system components, as well as understand how all the components work together.  In order for trainees to become a Siemens Certified Systems Associate, trainees must complete the following courses and pass the SMSCP Level 2 Certification Test.  Each course entails 60 hours of instruction:

  • Course 1: Process control technologies
  • Course 2: Introduction to Totally Integrated Automation
  • Course 3: Automation systems
  • Course 4: Motor control
  • Course 5: Mechanics & machine elements
  • Course 6: Manufacturing processes

Only by successfully passing the SMSCP Level 2 Certification Test will the trainee be awarded the certification of Siemens Certified Mechatronic Systems Associate.

The Level 3 trainee will characteristically be equivalent to a four-year college level engineering student.  At this level, trainees will design and build an entire mechatronic system and its applications, placing emphasis on project management. Our team of trained subject-matter experts will work with the trainee to obtain the internationally recognized Siemens Certified Mechatronic Systems Professional credential. In order for trainees to become a Siemens Certified Systems Professional, trainees must complete a 160-hour course and pass the SMSCP Level 3 Certification Test. The content areas are:
