When I explored options for an ideal career, I knew I wanted a career with lots of opportunities, flexibility, and job security; and a choice that would keep me “thinking and on my feet”. I found nursing to be an excellent option, and I am now approaching my last semester in the Southside Virginia Community College (SVCC) Associate Degree in Nursing program. I will be prepared to take the national licensing exam for Registered Nurses after I graduate in May 2018.
At first I wondered how I would fare as a male without any prior medical experience. In my first year of nursing school, which included clinical experiences as a student, and with much support from instructors, classmates, and family, I realized that I had made the right decision. There is such a great feeling that comes from helping people and trying to make their day a little brighter!
I would recommend nursing to both men and women because it is a rewarding, in demand profession, and there are so many directions to take in the field. For anyone considering nursing, I would recommend meeting with a college advisor to make sure you are on track. Take the pre-requisites very seriously, because grades matter on the admission application. And, talk to nurses and SVCC nursing faculty– they love their jobs and will encourage you to go for it!
