How does Halifax County become a more prosperous, successful, and vibrant place to live and work? Citizens are invited to help answer that question as Halifax County kicks off a community strategic planning effort on October 15th.
Public, private, and non-profit leaders in Halifax County have come together to develop a community strategic plan that will provide a roadmap to help the County address challenges, increase prosperity, and improve quality of life for current and future residents. The plan will address the full range of competitive factors that influence a community’s attractiveness, including talent, education and training resources, infrastructure, business climate, and quality of life and place.
With grant funds approved for the purchase of new buses, and proposed bus routes developed, bus service in Halifax County is on the road to becoming a reality.
The public is invited to attend an information sessions at the Southern VA Higher Education Center lobby on Oct. 17th at 2:00pm to learn more. SVHEC Executive Director Dr. Betty Adams will provide updates on the SoVA Regional Transportation Project, and will solicit input on the proposed routes.
“There are talented, hard-working people who want to get training for a new career or who want to be gainfully employed but they simply lack reliable transportation to achieve those goals. The Southern Virginia Regional Transportation Project will begin to change that by providing affordable access to education, jobs, healthcare, shopping, entertainment, and more,” Adams stated.

The Southern Virginia Higher Education Center Area Health Education Center (SVHEC-AHEC) and Halifax County-South Boston Public Library (HCSB) have partnered to bring “Dopesick: An Addicted America. A Night with Author Beth Macy” to the Prizery on Monday, October 22nd at 7:00pm. Additional event sponsors are Sentara Halifax Regional Hospital, Southside Community Services Board, and The Prizery.
Beth Macy is the New York Times Bestselling Author of Dopesick: Dealers, Doctors, and the Drug Company that Addicted America. In this highly anticipated, and recently released book, Macy examines the opioid crisis and its impact on three Virginia communities.
